1517-Martin Luther
` Martin Luther was born in Germany durring the year of 1843. He was raised as a Catholic and planned to have a career in law. When Martin was a boy he got very scared when he was caught in a violent thunderstorm. Every time he got caught in a storm, he vowed that if he survived he would become a monk. Martin kept his promise and studied the Bible completly and became a scholar and a teacher.
Through his early manhood, Martin asked god, "what must I do to be saved?". The Catholic church believed that keeping the sacraments and living a good life was the key to salvation. But, Martin's study of the Bible lead him to a different dicovery. He believed salvation is a gift by God for people who recieve faith. Martins veiws led him into conflict with the church over indulgences such as giving pardons in exchangefor money. He got angry when preist's needed money and looked to the church for help. So, Martin posted a list of arguments called the Nintey-FiveTheses. He posted the Nintey-Five Theses on a church door in a town called Wittenburg. Some of the arguments had to do with the church's indulgences. The theses caused huge controversy. Many people were exited by his ideas and others were not as thrilled. Martin was gradualy drawn into more serious disagreements with church athorities. Eventually Martin had to go into hiding but,his movement continued to spread.

He looked to the Greman princes to help him out with his religion. When the peasants revolted Martin would side with the ruler. For thirty years the Lutherns and Catholics were frequently at war. The wars ended in 1555 with the Peace of Augsburg. This was the first, eventually other religions sprang after Martin Luther's break away from the church.
