Page history last edited by Natassia Greene 2 yrs ago

William Tyndale was born in Gloucestershire in 1495. Later on in life he went to Oxford graduated and taught there for a while.

In 1524 he left London to translate the Bible! In 1525 he started printing in Cologne,Germany. He had only printed but a few pages when the city fathers heard of it and stopped it. He continued his work in Worms,Germany. In April of 1526 an octavo edition of the Bible in London but,in November they were being burned at St.Paul's Cross. He published a revision in 1534 and another in 1535. Also, in 1535 he was snatched and put in prison. He was then strangulated and his body was publicly burned at the stake. He was a great Christian man who really loved God.

The first New Testament printed in English was Tyndale's translation. It was illegal under the 1408 Constitutions of Oxford to translate the Bible into the native language. The Bibles were smuggled into England because his translation was pronounced heretical. At first the people who were caught owning them only had the Bibles burned as a punishment, but later the people were burned. I think it was a good thing that he translated the Bible otherwise people who didn't read Latin couldn't understand the Bible.Natassia G.
