Plymouth Plantation
Plymouth was founded when a group of pilgrims went on a trip to escape England. They were running away from England because of religious beliefs. Two ships set sail to find new land. The ships were called th Mayflower and the Speedwell. Nintey people boarded the Mayflower and thirty boarded the Speedwell. All together one hundred and twenty people set sail for new land. But during the trip the Speedwell experianced major leakage and had to turn back. The trip was horrible, but on November 11, 1620 the Mayflower hit land.
They called the land Plymouth. Plymouth was ran by one govener who is the most powerful. The goveners assitants. Constables who were the bosses of the least important people, the messengers. Messengers made anouncements, performed land surveys, carried out executions, and more. The colony was ran by pastor John Robinson, church elder William Bradford, and Myles Standish who was the military leader, assistant govener, town representitive, and the colonies treasurer. Everyone was required to go to church and learn scriptures. There were five to six children in each family and since schools were rare woman had to teach and look after the children.
Because it was a new colony they had to learn how to make a living. They planted maize, squash, pumpkins, beans, potatoes, turnips, carrots, peas, wheat, barely, and oats. They got most of their money from trading. They traded fur, fish, cattle, pigs, sheep, and goats.
Plymouth is an important event because the early settlers paved way for people to practice their own religion. They also helped develop modern art, mythology, and traditions. They also found new land that is now known as Plymouth, Massachussetts. Plymouth was also one of the first colonies found in North America. I respect the pilgrims for traveling all the way from England to North America not knowing what they would find. And they ended up doing great!
