First Constitutional Congress
In 1774 there was a meeting in Philadelphia PA with representatives from all of the colonies except Georgia. The First Constitutional Congress was supposed to discuss their right to be a colony and how they would reply to Britain that they wanted to be free.
They focused on three main points during the Congress: create a rights statement that would give citizens certain rights, Britain’s violating these rights to citizens and how to persuade Britain to follow those rights with the colonies. The Congress ended by the delegates deciding to not except trade goods and follow their own Rights Policy. They also decided that if things did not change with Britain they would meet again and make another plan to become separate from Brittan. The King of Britain was not happy and responded by cutting off access to fishing routes.
People who attended the First Continental Congress included John Adams, Peyton Randolph, Richard Henry Lee, George Washington, Patrick Henry, and Samuel Adams. Many of these people played an important part in the beginning of the America and in the Declaration of Independence from Britain.
The First Continental Congress was important because it was the beginning of the separation of America from Britain. The delegates talked about what they wanted for the colonies.
