Course Summary
In 1838 the Cherokee Native American tribe was was forced to leave Georgia and move to Oklahoma. This resulted in in an estiamated deaths of 4,000 out of 15,000 Cherokees. This was was caused by the, "Indian Removal act of 1830."
The Cherokee Trail of tears was a result of the treaty of the New Echota. This agreement was singed under the provisions of the Indian Removal Act. The treaty was mainly enforced by President Andrew Jackson. He was the one who sent the troops to the camps.
At the camps their was about 17,000 Cherokee people. They were sent their before being sent to the west. In the camps was were most of the deaths took place.Thats becouse the camps were plagued by dysentery and other illness. When the millitary finaly round up all the Cherokee's up, they actuly played little part.
The Native Amaricans used existing roads to travel on. They traveled in groups ranging from 700 to 1,600. The groups were lead by leaders appointed by Jhon Ross. They had supplies of flour and corn, and occansionally salt pork, coffie, and sugar. They got all their supplies in advanced but they were poor quility.
"This is a picture of the route thet the Native Amaricans took."
When they finaly got to what they now call Oklahoma their was 2,000 deaths due to the camps and their was 2,000 deaths from the journey. If it wasn't for the trail of Tears their wound be so many indain rights today.
